Places to visit in Trivandrum

  • Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

If you are a nature lover, the Thiruvanathapuram Zoo is one of the most exciting places to visit. It is one of the oldest zoos in the country. Located in the heart of the city, the zoo was established by Swati Thirunal Rama Varma, and houses some rare species of snakes (like Anacondas and Pythons), Tigers and birds.

The entry fee is Rs. 20 and it would take about 3-4 hours to explore the whole zoo. There are a lot of places to rest and discover the place at your own pace.

  • Sree Chitra Art Gallery

    Chitra Art Gallery

This art gallery, established in 1935 by the royal family of Trivandrum, is one of the most serene places in the the Zoo and Museum complex. The atmosphere of the gallery is quite pleasant and it might be worthwhile to spend some time admiring a mix of modern and traditional paintings by artists like Raja Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich.

If you want to escape the hustle bustle of the city during your layover, here are some day trip destinations that might be of interest to you.

  • Varkala

This holiday destination  is quite different from the other more traditional parts of Kerala and is very popular for foreign tourists. Spend your time swimming in the beaches and eating at restaurants/shacks along The Cliff.  You can also sign up for various Ayurveda treatments and Yoga classes on the beach to rejuvenate yourself!

Best way to reach Varkala from Trivandrum is by the local train which would take about 50 minutes.

  • Kovalam


At a distance of 13 km from Trivandrum, Kovalam, on the shores of Arabian Sea, is one of the most famous Beaches in Kerala. The whole area beyond the shores around Kovalam is filled with endless sight of coconut trees offering magnificent views while approaching the beach. There are three beaches in Kovalam. The most popular beach is the Light House Beach and offers an amazing sight of the Vizhinjam Mosque.

  • Ariya Niwas is a pure vegetarian restaurant that serves South Indian food like Dosa, Vada etc. The place is clean and service is extremely fast. The prices are quite affordable as well.
